Introduction :

Heat cramps :

Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms that typically occur during or after intense physical activity in hot weather. They are caused by the loss of fluids and electrolytes through sweating, leading to imbalances in the body.

Symptoms :

  1. Muscle pain or spasms, usually in the abdomen, arms, or legs
  2. Sweating
  3. Fatigue

Primary treatment :

  1. Rest and Hydration:- Immediately stop the activity that caused the muscle cramps. Find a cool, shaded area to rest. Rehydrate by drinking water or sports drinks containing electrolytes to fill up lost fluids and minerals.
  2. Massage:- Lightly massage the cramped muscles to promote blood flow and ease the tightness. Use gentle pressure and circular motions to help relax the muscles and reduce discomfort. Avoid vigorous rubbing, which can increase pain or cause extra injury.
  3. Stretching:- Gently stretch the affected muscles to relieve tension and prevent further cramping. Focus on slow, controlled stretches. Hold each stretch for 15-30 seconds without bouncing.
  4. Cooling Measures:- Apply ice packs or cold compresses to the cramped muscles. Reduce inflammation and provide relief. Don’t apply ice directly to the skin; instead, wrap the ice pack in a towel or cloth to prevent frostbite.

Heat exhaustion :

Symptoms :

  1. Heavy sweating:– Excessive sweating is one of the initial signs of heat exhaustion as the body tries to cool down.
  2. Weakness and fatigue:– person may feel weak, tired, and dull due to the strain on the body caused by too much heat.
  3. Dizziness or lightheadedness:– Feeling dizzy or faint is common as blood pressure drops due to dehydration and increased exertion.
  4. Nausea or vomiting:– Heat exhaustion can cause gastrointestinal disturbances, leading to feelings of nausea or vomiting.
  5. Headache:– continuous headaches are another symptom of heat exhaustion.

Primary treatment :

  1. Move to a cooler environment:– Move the individual to a shade. So you can stop further heat exposure.
  2. Hydration:– Give the person to drink cool water. Also one can give glucose water
  3. Rest:– Have the individual rest in a comfortable position.
  4. Cooling measures:– Apply cool, damp cloths to the skin.
  5. Loosen clothing:– Remove tight or unnecessary clothing so, the heat can reduce. Wear white, loose cloths, caps, and sun glasses.
  6. Medical attention: – If the symptoms such as confusion, dizziness, high fever are there get medical help.

Heat stroke :

Symptoms :

1. Hot, dry skin and rapid heartbeat:- The skin feels hot and dry to the touch. Pulse may be fast and strong.

2 .Change in mental state or behavior:- Symptoms may include confusion, agitation, delirium, or even loss of consciousness.

3. Body temperature: Body temperature may increase to 104°F; therefore, it is essential to monitor it closely.

Primary treatment :

  1. Immediate cooling: Move the individual to a cooler environment, preferably indoors or in the shade. Remove excess clothing and apply cool water to the skin or ice packs to help lower body temperature.
  2. Hydration: Give the person to drink cool water or sports drinks.
  3. Medical attention: Seek emergency medical assistance promptly. Heat stroke is a serious condition that requires professional medical care.

Tip : – Water or any drink should be cool ( normal temperature ) not cold or chilled.
